Auckland Viaduct’s Maritime Square has been under inscape’s meticulous care since 2005. It is a formal landscape which is carefully maintained to appear uniform, with clean, crisp lines. Day lilies are bordered by Teucrium which has been trimmed with exacting precision. Complimenting the day lilies is a row of olive trees, which soften the retaining wall that forms a backdrop to the garden bed. On the upper level of Maritime Square there are raised garden beds sown with lush green lawns, as well as rows of formally trimmed Buxus hedge. Maritime Square creates a gorgeous streetscape along Fanshawe Street with its lush grass strip which is punctuated with budding Pohutakawa trees.
Westfield Albany Shopping Centre
Inscape has maintained the exterior grounds, as well as the interior plants, of Westfield Albany Shopping Centre since its opening in 2008. The shopping centre has extensive grounds which have been thoughtfully landscaped. The grounds include everything from rolling lawns bordered with native flaxes, to luscious shade trees which are off-set by a backdrop of vibrant yellow day lilies. There is also a large terraced retaining wall which has been planted with native grasses. The hard concrete of the retaining wall has been softened by a climbing plant, whose leaves are beautifully flecked with hues of red and green.
Auckland’s bustling Viaduct is home to a number of popular restaurants and bars. Inscape assists in the outdoor-indoor flow between these eateries and the surrounding landscape with the well thought-out placement of planters containing carefully maintained Corokia hedges and topiaries with mondo grass. These eye-catching planters encourage people to walk off the pavement and into the adjacent restaurants and bars, making patrons feel welcome and relaxed.
Inscape has maintained both Quay West’s interior plants and their roof top garden since 2003. When inscape took over this site plants were dying and diseased, the irrigation was not working and the definitions of the stone borders were less than desired. Inscape has made a dramatic improvement to this unique Auckland CBD roof top garden with additional plants and increased stone volume, raising this garden to inscape’s high standards. The roof top garden, which can be found on level five, is accessible via a number of rooms as well as by a conference room. The different raised planter beds represent the islands in the Hauraki Gulf, while the blue paving line symbolises the meridian line. The islands include plants such as Poor Knight’s Lilies, Pohutakawa trees and mondo grass. Each planter bed is marked by a wavy border of dark pebble, surrounded by white crushed stone. Found amongst these islands is a secluded gazebo for people to sit in and relax. This garden is a little piece of Eden for people in the central city to escape and be transported.
